Iceland has a new tourist attraction that is taking Instagram by storm
Plus, more deep dives into history and the mental chains of our nation
Hey! Did you know there’s a new tourist attraction in Iceland?
It’s called Gjaldskylda.
Seriously, go to Instagram, type “gjaldskylda” into the search, and see what you get.
No? Ok, I’ll do it for you.
Wait … those are all different places in Iceland. Surely they’re not all Gjaldskylda?
Teeheehee. Gjaldskylda means “Pay to park” which is what you will see on many signs around Iceland, and increasingly near tourist attractions.
So … folks are misunderstanding, thinking that’s the name of the location and tagging their posts with #gjaldskylda.
Like this video (that I screen recorded because it wouldn’t embed):
Meanwhile, the fact that there is now Gjaldskylda in a million different places around the country where a year or two ago there were none … well, that is another post altogether.
Okay, that was my big amusement for the week. 🤪 It kind of ameliorated the heaviness of my current obsession: the Icelandic dark ages, also known as the 631 years that the common people were under the Landowner Oligarchy!
Gawd that was a horrible time in our history.
