Not a fan of hákarl (though I have finally learned a trick to eating it) but I love the shark museum, so yay! for promotin it. I agree with David Johnson's comment about Stykkishólmskirkja, it reminds me personally too much of American heavily evangelical mega-churches. But I'm a pretty old-fashioned gal.

I like the church, perhaps because it doesn't look like a church. Looks like a beautiful area.

Tried to eat hakarl both times I visited Iceland, but the ammonia smell screams poison to my hindbrain. I am embarrassed by this. Hoping to get back to Iceland for the eclipse in 2 years, maybe then.

Narfeyarstofa is probably the best restaurant I've eaten at in all of Iceland. I find the church a bit bizarre in an amusing sort of way. But it definitely does not fit in with the charm of Stykkishólmur.

A very interesting post, thanks again. I have Biden there and love reading your description. I like hákarl when it’s hung to dry and sliced very thin. Thanks again, Alda.

Love Stykkishólmur - enjoyed our visit there. Known for pretending to be Nuuk and the location of the Greenlandic bar where Walter Mitty embarks on his quest.

Bjarnahöfn shark museum is definitely a must-see! And anyone who doesn't taste the hákarl is a yellow-bellied coward!

I love a lot of Icelandic church architecture, including Stykkishólmskirkja. Others I like very much include Áskirkja, Fella- og Hólakirkja and Reykhóltskirkja for modern ones, and Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík and Húsavíkurkirkja for traditional.

And of course the magnificent Hallgrímskirkja, whose transcendant light never fails to uplift me!

I guess I'm not a huge fan of the architecture of Stykkishómskirkja. It seems a little ostentatious, too modern, and reminds me of Evangelical mega churches in the US. I like grand churches in big city centers, but humble churches in smaller locales. I wonder how many actually attend on an average Sunday.

Actually, in the modern day, the question of how many attend church on Sundays is unimportant as churches here are used much more as concert halls, memorial services, and such. Few Icelanders attend regular services any more, though churches are indispensible for weddings, confirmations, funerals, etc.

Yes, that I'm aware of. It's such an odd contrast to the USA where in most areas church attendance every Sunday is a huge thing. Most churches have full parking lots every Sunday.
